Academic Probation

A student is considered to be in Academic Good Standing if he or she meets the minimum grade point average (GPA) on cumulative hours attempted for his or her classification (Freshman, Sophomore, Junior, or Senior) during a Fall or a Spring semester as outlined below:

Freshman

0-29 semester hours earned         1.8 GPA on cumulative hours attempted

Sophomore, Junior, Senior

30 + semester hours earned          2.0 GPA on cumulative hours attempted

There are three categories of academic probation status recognized at the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor: academic probation, continued probation, and continued probation by petition. Each of these is explained in appropriate areas of the following sections.

 

Academic Probation: An undergraduate student failing to meet the minimum standards above during a Fall or a Spring semester is automatically placed on academic probation for the ensuing “long” semester:

A student who enters the University on academic probation or who is placed on academic probation is expected to conform to the following regulations:

  1. Reduce academic load to a maximum of 15 semester hours;
  2. Adhere to individualized academic action plan created in consultation with the student’s assigned Student Success Coordinator.

To be removed from academic probation, a student must achieve all of the following:

  1. Earn a grade of “D” or higher in at least 12 hours of full-time coursework at UMHB in the ensuing “long” semester.
  2. Achieve a term 2.0 GPA during the ensuing “long” semester.
  3. Achieve the overall GPA level required for the student’s classification.

 

Continued Probation: If a student does not meet the requirements to be removed from academic probation as described above, he/she will be placed on continued probation if one of the following situations exists after completing the semester on academic probation:

  1. The student took fewer than 12 hours of coursework during the semester on probation, and yet still earned a term GPA of 2.0 or better.
  2. The student successfully completed 12 hours of course work and made a term GPA of 2.0 or better, but did not raise the overall GPA to the level required for the student’s classification.

During the period of continued probation, these rules will apply:

The Student:

  • Will be able to participate in all activities related to courses for which the student is enrolled;
  • Will be required to adhere to an individualized academic action plan developed with their assigned Student Success Coordinator or staff member in the Center for Academic Excellence;
  • Will not represent the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor in any activity (except those related to courses for which the student is enrolled) under the direct supervision of any university area, such as intercollegiate contests and off- campus productions; and
  • Will not hold a leadership position/role in any activity (except those related to courses for which the student is enrolled) under the sponsorship of any university area, such as student clubs and organizations.

 

Academic Suspension: A student who does not achieve a term GPA of 2.0 or better during the semester on probation will be placed on academic suspension. Students placed on academic suspension will be suspended for a minimum of one “long” semester. For example: A student placed on academic suspension at the end of the fall semester will not be allowed to re-enroll until the start of the summer semester. For students who are placed on academic suspension at the end of the spring semester, the suspension will begin at the next fall semester and students may still participate in summer classes.

 

A student who has been suspended must apply to be readmitted (on probation) through the regular admission procedure at the completion of the suspension period. If readmission is granted, the student will be required to comply with the regulations listed in the Academic Probation section above.

 

Continued Probation by Petition: A student who petitions for a waiver of academic suspension and has the suspension waived by the student’s academic Dean will be placed on continued probation by petition and all rules in the section above on continued probation will apply.
