Basic theoretical concepts and skills relating to the music of the common practice period. The course covers basic concepts of notation, melody, rhythm, harmony, and analysis, with an emphasis on harmonic structure and progression. Should be taken concurrently with MUSI 1131.

Includes counterpoint, all diatonic triads and seventh chords, inversions, and non-chord tones and emphasizes four-voice part writing as a tool for learning melodic structure, principles of voice leading, and harmonic progression. Should be taken concurrently with MUSI 1132. Prerequisite: MUSI 1331.

FOR NON-MAJORS ONLY. A course designed to develop a deeper appreciation of music through the discovery of the design of melodic, rhythmic, harmonic, and contrapuntal aspects of music. A study of the musical forms represented in the various periods of the history of Western Civilization.
