An overview of the study of English, the English major, and related professions and careers and opportunities for graduate study. Students will be introduced to the portfolio required for all majors. Students should take this course at the beginning of their work in the major.  Prerequisite: One 2000-level English course.

This course will introduce students to the array of disciplines that come under the umbrella of English studies as well as the array of traditional modes of inquiry, conventions, and approaches that typify the field with a goal of exploring the relationships between English and the Christian faith. Focus will be on literature, composition and rhetoric, theory, digital humanities, and scholarship.

Prerequisites: ENGL 1321, ENGL 1322, and one 2000-literature course; non-English majors and minors will also need instructor approval.

Survey of the major American writers and representative selections from colonial times to the present. Prerequisites: ENGL 1321, 1322, and one 2000-level English course.

A survey of world literature in translation. Prerequisites: 1321, 1322, and one 2000-level English course.

A study of specific literary periods and/or genres, such as (but not limited to) Medieval, Romantic, Victorian, or Modern poetry, drama, or fiction. The course offers focused, in-depth analysis of literary developments in British, American, or global contexts. With the department chair's approval, this course may be repeated for credit when the content varies.

A careful study of an individual author or a select group of authors through which students will learn to apply the tools of critical analysis. This course provides a cross-cultural survey of 20^th and 21^st-Century multi-ethnic literature from the United States and a variety of other countries. The course explores several genres- including the short story, novel, poetry, drama and film, and critical essays-by analyzing their themes and literary style and by situating them within their historical and cultural contexts in order to provide insight to multiple cultures and their viewpoints. Prerequisites: 1321, 1322, and one 2000-level English course.
